Intro to 3D - Final Render

Today I finished the last part of my vending machine and rendered it in Marmoset. I'm very happy with how it turned out and felt that I learnt a lot from this project.

Intro to 3D - Base texture colours

Today I started texturing my vending machine. At the moment I'm only doing base colours on the diffuse map just to make sure I have a colour scheme that works and I like.

Intro to 3D - Model updates

Today I have made a few changes to my vending machine, hopefully the last model changes. I removed all the bolts and gaps in and on the vents as these can just be textured on and are not worth wasting polygons on. Secondly, I changed how the bottles are dispensed (again!). They now come out of a machine at the bottom and then land on a ramp which safely deposits at the end for the patron to take. The third change was that I optimized my model, getting rid of about 500 vertices. Lastly I made the gaps on the top and side of my machine wider to emphasize them.

Intro to 3D - Render update

Today I found a way to solve a problem I was having with my vending machine model, the shadowed edges. I tried several times to edit the edge positions with no luck and even tried remodeling the whole body of the machine but the method used too many polygons. I found a way of editing the normal's of the object (something I previously didn't understand correctly) and softened the edges all the way round the shape. The first screenshot is before the change whilst the second is after the change. This makes me feel much happier about my model.

Intro to 3D - 3D Model

Today I finished my 3D model for my vending machine concept. We had a polygon limit of 4500 triangles which I kept to. I'm quite happy with the model but I found the main body quite hard to keep within the poly limit without losing quality. As you can see in the render below the body has areas which don't appear curved towards the back of the image. I would have liked more polygons to add to the plug yet I don't feel I had any polygons which weren't necessary in the model. Overall I am happy with the model though and look forward to adding textures to it.

Intro to 3D - Vending Machine Concept Update

Since my last update on my vending machine project, I have made quite a few design changes regarding how it would actually work and function correctly. The first change I addressed was probably the most important, how the bottles dispense and are given to the customer. Before I had a bay underneath the machine that the bottle would fall into. Whilst I like the idea, considering the machine is based off the 1950's when they used glass bottles, it had a flaw in that the bottle itself could have smashed. So to change this I came up with the idea of having the actual buttons dispense bottles. To do this the customer would pay for their drink and then pull the lever next to the button. The button would fold out slightly showing a holder with a bottle in it. This looks nice, won't break the bottle and is more suitable to a machine that is situated on \a bar or table. The next change was a coin slot. This is pretty obvious but I forgot previously as to how the customers would pay. I gave each button its own coin slot partially for aesthetics but also because of how the levers work. Lastly I gave the machine a power source. Again very obvious but something I previously missed. It is simply a wall socket plug coming out the back of the machine. Below you can see my updated blueprints and new perspective artwork that show the changes.

Intro to 3D - Vending machine concept progression

I was set the task of designing, creating, texturing and rendering a vending machine for my Intro to 3D module at University. These are some of my initial design sketches:

I decided on the machine on the lower half of the page above. I went and did small thumbnails of details on the vending machine, a mood board giving a feel of the object and a digital drawing of the machine from the front and side views.

I then progressed the design further by creating 4 pictures of the machine from different angles, all to scale, a colour perspective drawing and a digital board for it.

Next I am going back to make changes to the design, namely how the bottles dispense, a coin slot, a form of power and to add more textures to the perspective drawing to give it a more real look.
