CDDA - Real world dwarf lore

Despite being set in fantasy worlds, I believe that dwarfs have been based off beings in our world at one point or another. Thinking this I decided to research what people believe about dwarfs within our world. Much of the information comes from Nordic stories and writings. This is what I found out.

1. They are usually connected to smithing and mining.
2. They are associated with magic, namely guarding doorways to other worlds in their mountains and by creating/possessing magical artifacts.
3. They have long beards and their faces look aged.

Those points are for the most part agreed upon by the different sources. The next points are less commonly thought: 

1. They are associated with death and murder.
2. They are sexual predators. 
3. They are considered similar to trolls in that they turn to stone in direct sunlight.

The last point is one that is very much split between the oldest sources and those in later times. It regards their size. Whilst people after Christianization believe that the dwarfs are literally small beings, those before it believe that they were lesser supernatural beings. The fact that they were considered lesser beings could have literally been translated as small beings. I personally believe that they were literally small but may have supernatural influences in my character.
